NU CHI CHAPTER

OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY, INC.

 HISTORY

NU CHI Chapter of OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY was chartered April 10, 1955 by 9 well educated men with like ideals. Each of these men had the aspiration to uplift their community by making a difference in their field of endeavor. While in attendance at the local black high school basketball games the founders of NU CHI would meet to plan the foundation of the chapter in East St. Louis.

Bro. La Verne Crawford was the catalyst of NU CHI becoming a chapter. Bro. Crawford befriended many Omega men of the metropolitian area; while uplifting the community they heard of a graduate chapter in St. Louis (Upsilon Omega) which had been in existance for over 30 years. After affiliating themselves with the brothers of Upsilon Omega for some time they were ready to set out and start their own chapter in East St. Louis.

NU CHI was responsible for chartering two additional chapters in the area which are TAU GAMMA - SIU Edwardsville 1965 (UNDERGRADUATE) and TAU Upsilon - SIU Carbondale 1968 (GRADUATE). NU CHI has had the privilege of hosting 3 district conventions in 1957, 1972, and 1984 respectively. NU CHI is scheduled to host the 68th Annual 10th District convention in 2005.

NU CHI Founders consist of Bro. Frederick Birth University of Arkansas @ Pine Bluff, Bro. Laverne Crawford University of Illinois @ Champaign, Bro. Levi Hollis Dozier Wiley College, Bro.
